Kelly Rowland reacts to being mentioned in Beyoncé's new song with Madonna

Imagine being in a group with Beyoncé—talk about self-doubt! You might think, “I can’t wear this dress because it might be compared to Beyoncé’s style,” or “I can’t release a song that sounds similar to hers.” For years, Kelly Rowland has had to navigate the constant comparisons to Beyoncé, but has Beyoncé really done enough to alleviate these comparisons, or does it seem like a case of a fake friend who doesn’t care about how it affects Kelly?

Despite Kelly’s impressive achievements—Grammy awards, a New York Times best-selling book, multiple platinum records, movie accolades, and production credits—she is still often overshadowed by questions about Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child. For example, during an interview on Ebro in the Morning with Laura Styles and Rosenberg, the hosts kept insisting that Kelly was always in Beyoncé’s shadow. Kelly responded with grace, saying, “I don’t think anybody’s light dims anyone else’s. I know that I’m a light too,” emphasizing that comparisons are a reflection of others’ insecurities, not her own.

However, the host continued to press on Kelly’s role within Destiny’s Child, which she didn’t appreciate. Kelly asserted, “My sister has knocked down doors and made positions for so many women that look like her, and I do it for other brown girls too. It’s a cycle of opening doors for each other, not comparing.”

More recently, during an appearance on V103 Atlanta, Kelly was asked about Beyoncé’s potential Destiny’s Child reunion and future album announcements. Kelly’s frustration was evident when she said she was tired of the constant Destiny’s Child questions and was there to discuss her own work. She was clearly annoyed by the persistent comparisons and questions.

In 2020, on The Voice Australia, Kelly opened up about the impact of comparisons to Beyoncé, admitting that it bothered her, despite her efforts to downplay it. She said, “There was a whole decade where it was like the elephant in the room, constantly beyond my shoulder.”

The ongoing comparisons have led some to criticize Beyoncé for not doing enough to discourage them. There are allegations that Beyoncé and her father, Matthew Knowles, have been complicit in fostering comparisons within Destiny’s Child. Farah Franklin, a former member, claimed that Matthew Knowles tried to exploit her, and there were accusations of favoritism towards Beyoncé. Former band members like LaTavia Roberson and LaToya Luckett have also criticized Matthew Knowles. Michelle Williams even spoke about struggling with depression during her time with the group, which she felt was not taken seriously by management.

Some believe that Beyoncé could have been more supportive of Kelly during her career struggles, and feel that Beyoncé’s ambition and competitive nature might have contributed to Kelly’s challenges. Despite Kelly’s achievements, some think Beyoncé could have helped her more during tough times.

Additionally, Kelly’s past mistakes, such as accidentally revealing Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s baby’s gender, have fueled rumors of jealousy, though Kelly has clarified it was an honest mistake.

What do you think? Has Beyoncé been a true friend to Kelly, or do you believe she has intentionally avoided helping Kelly or discouraging harmful comparisons? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
