Mariska Hargitay & BD Wong’s Final Scene Together on SVU Was So Intense
BD Wong’s George Huang: The Evolution and End of a Beloved SVU Character
Huang, introduced to Benson in Season 2, Episode 20 (“Pique”), brought a unique perspective as a psychiatrist on loan from the FBI. Over time, his character deepened, revealing facets of his personal life, including his fluency in Chinese and his identity as a gay Chinese-American man from a traditional family, explored in episodes like Season 3, Episode 8 (“Inheritance”) and Season 11, Episode 5 (“Hardwired”).
Wong’s portrayal of Huang evolved from a recurring role to a series regular by Season 3, solidifying his place within the SVU team until Season 12, Episode 19 (“Bombshell”), marking his last regular appearance.
The pinnacle of Huang and Benson’s professional and personal relationship, however, unfolded and fractured in Season 17, Episode 9 (“Depravity Standard”). Here, Huang’s decision to retire early and shift to a consulting role created a rift, particularly when he became a defense expert in a case Benson was prosecuting. His testimony challenged Benson’s past actions and strained their bond, culminating in a tense confrontation in a courthouse elevator.
“You and I used to put people like that away,” Benson admonished Huang, referencing their shared pursuit of justice.
Huang’s insistence on professional ethics and impartiality, especially regarding Benson’s interrogation methods, highlighted the complex dynamics at play. Their heated exchange, amidst the pressures of a high-stakes trial, underscored their divergent paths and marked Huang’s final appearance on SVU.
BD Wong’s portrayal of Dr. George Huang left an indelible mark on Law & Order: SVU, showcasing not only his character’s psychological acumen but also the intricate relationships woven throughout the series. As Huang bid farewell, his legacy as a compassionate advocate for justice and mental health continues to resonate within the SVU universe and among its devoted audience.
