Former Atletico Madrid defender Felipe Luis has apologised for using a dirty trick to stop Angel Di Maria on the advice of Sergio Aguero while playing for Atletico Madrid. The Brazilian left-back was one of the ace defenders for Los Colchoneros, playing 333 games over two stints.

During his time at Civitas Metropolitano, Luis won one La Liga, four UEFA Super Cups, two Europa Leagues and one Spanish Cup. The Brazilian also shared the pitch with Argentine marksman Sergio Aguero during the 2010-11 season.

Felipe Luis revealed on the Charla Podcast that he once got advice from Aguero on how to deal with Di Maria before the Madrid derby. Aguero suggested that the only way to rile him up was to badmouth his wife Jorgelina Cardoso. Despite being successful in his endeavor, the Brazilian wasn’t pleased with his actions.

Recalling the incident, Felipe Luis asked for De Maria’s forgiveness in the podcast.

“My biggest regret was with Di Maria,’ Filipe Luis said (via Daily Mail). Sergio told me: “If you talk about his wife, he will lose his composure.”

“I mentioned his wife, and he was devastated. I outplayed him the whole game, and he didn’t do well. I came home, and I regretted it so much. Di Maria, I’m sorry.”

Felipe Luis clashed with Angel Di Maria several times in his career, but the Argentine won in one of the most high-profile fixtures. In the 2014 Champions League final, the two city rivals played each other, with Di Maria’s Real Madrid winning 4-1 in extra time.

Angel Di Maria once opened up about Sergio Aguero’s woes with injury while at Barcelona. Despite being rivals at club level, the two seemingly had a good bond because of their Argentina connection.

Talking to Diario Ole in 2021, he said (via Barcacentre):

“Kun wants to kill himself. What is he going to do? The worst thing is that he’s injured again. He was making a great effort with his knee, and it’s happened again. Hopefully, he will go back to what he was.”

However, the former Real Madrid frontman was giggling while making the comment, suggesting that Aguero wasn’t seriously contemplating suicide.

The former Manchester City striker joined Barcelona on a free transfer in 2021. However, his career never took off there because of constant injury concerns. He played only five games for Barcelona across competitions, scoring a solitary goal against Dynamo Kyiv.

To exacerbate matters, his national teammate Lionel Messi left Barcelona within weeks of his arrival at the Camp Nou. Aguero eventually retired from international football in December 2021 owing to heart problems.
