Ice-T Talks Bringing Street Cred to ‘Law and Order: SVU,’ Friendship With Mariska Hargitay and Connecting With Dick Wolf on a ‘Gangster Level’
While Ice-T is best known for his groundbreaking music career, he’s also a familiar face on television screens every Thursday night, captivating audiences as Odafin “Fin” Tutuola on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” His journey from rapper to actor is as compelling as his on-screen performances.
From Music to Movies
Ice-T’s foray into acting began with a breakout role in 1991’s “New Jack City,” followed by “Surviving the Game” in 1994. His big break in television came in 1995, when he landed a recurring role as a drug dealer on Dick Wolf’s “New York Undercover.” This marked the beginning of a long and fruitful professional relationship with Wolf, leading to roles in “Players” and “Exiled: A Law & Order Movie.”
The Birth of Fin Tutuola
In 2000, Ice-T was introduced as Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola in Season 2 of “Law & Order: SVU.” Despite initial reluctance, as he was busy running a record label, Ice-T agreed to a four-episode stint that has since blossomed into a 24-year tenure, making him one of the longest-running characters on the show.
A Lasting Legacy
Reflecting on his career with “SVU,” Ice-T recalls an early conversation with the late Andre Hall, a producer on “New York Undercover.” Initially hesitant about TV, he humorously responded, “Fuck you. I’m a movie star.” Yet, his role as “Danny Up” on “New York Undercover” was extended due to his compelling performance, leading to further opportunities with Wolf.
Ice-T’s transition to “SVU” wasn’t seamless. He joined the show without knowing anyone, but his candid approach won over his co-stars. “I used to rob banks in real life,” he told them. “If I’m robbing a bank, I don’t need to like you. I just need to know if you can get into a safe, control a room, scan the radio, and drive.” This pragmatic attitude forged strong bonds with his colleagues, especially Mariska Hargitay.
A Deep Bond with Mariska Hargitay
Hargitay, who plays Olivia Benson, initially found Ice-T intimidating but quickly recognized his depth and generosity. “He’s a wonderfully curious, principled, loyal, gentle spirit,” she said. Their on-screen chemistry is matched by an off-screen friendship, with Ice-T noting that he makes more money with Hargitay than anyone else, solidifying her importance in his life.
A Relationship Built on Trust
Ice-T’s relationship with Dick Wolf is equally significant. “Me and Dick Wolf connect on a very gangster level. He’s the boss. I’m part of his organization. He’s never lied to me. He’s always paid up,” he said. Ice-T values Wolf’s honesty and loyalty, considering himself a crucial part of Wolf’s team.
A Masterclass in Acting
No Plans to Slow Down
With no intention of stepping away from television, Ice-T remains a fixture on “SVU.” He appreciates the dynamic and fast-paced nature of TV production, which keeps him engaged and constantly honing his craft. As Dick Wolf succinctly put it, “Ice has been the gold standard for the past 28 years.”
Ice-T’s journey from a music icon to a television legend is a testament to his versatility and dedication. His enduring presence on “Law & Order: SVU” continues to captivate audiences, making him an integral part of the show’s success.
