Superman hasn’t hung up his cape yet. Or so says Henry Cavill, who portrayed the iconic superhero beginning with “Man of Steel” in 2013 and most recently in the 2017 film “Justice League.” Despite the challenges faced by the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), the “Witcher” actor is adamant that his time as Superman isn’t over.
“The cape is in the closet,” Cavill declared in Men’s Health’s December cover story. “It’s still mine. I’m not going to sit quietly in the dark as all this stuff is going on. I’ve not given up the role. There’s a lot I have to give for Superman yet. A lot of storytelling to do. A lot of real, true depths to the honesty of the character I want to get into. I want to reflect the comic books. That’s important to me. There’s a lot of justice to be done for Superman. The status is: You’ll see.”
Cavill’s statement comes amid Warner Bros.’ ongoing re-evaluation of its plans for the DCEU, following the disappointing performance of “Justice League.” Despite the film’s shortcomings, Cavill’s portrayal of Superman has remained a highlight for many fans. His commitment to the role suggests there is still potential for the character’s future in the evolving cinematic universe.
Since “Justice League,” Warner Bros. has focused on other parts of the DCEU, with notable successes such as 2018’s “Aquaman” — one of the year’s most profitable movies, grossing over $1 billion worldwide — and April 2019’s “Shazam!,” which was well-received by both critics and audiences.
In the meantime, Cavill has kept busy with other high-profile projects. He appeared in “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” alongside Tom Cruise, where his performance received acclaim. Additionally, he stars in Netflix’s TV adaptation of “The Witcher,” which premiered on December 20, 2019. The series has generated significant buzz, further solidifying Cavill’s status as a leading man in Hollywood.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Superman’s future on the big screen, Cavill’s passion for the character and his desire to continue exploring the role are clear. As Warner Bros. and DC Films consider the next steps for their superhero franchise, fans can hold onto the hope that Henry Cavill’s Superman will soar again.
For now, the cape remains in the closet, ready for its next flight. And with Cavill’s unwavering dedication, the Man of Steel’s story might just be far from over.
