REPORT: Lakers prepare blockbuster trade to pair Donovan Mitchell with LeBron James

Donovan Mitchell could be the key factor for the Los Angeles Lakers if they want to retain LeBron James. LeBron’s future with the Lakers is uncertain following a crushing playoff loss against the Denver Nuggets, and he has the option to opt out of his contract before the 2024-2025 season.

LeBron addressed the speculation about his future, saying, “I’ve seen, heard a lot of reports about my future. I said it last night and I’ll say it again. I do not know yet as I’m only thinking about spending time with my family & friends! When I know after speaking with the fam, my counsel as well as my representation about it then you guys will know. Until then (silence emoji). Love.”

To prevent LeBron from signing with another team, the Lakers might consider a significant trade to provide him with better support. Initially, Trae Young seemed to be their top target, but Donovan Mitchell has now emerged as a more appealing option.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were recently eliminated by the Boston Celtics, with Mitchell injured during the final two games. If the Cavs fail to build a championship-caliber roster around him, Mitchell might be open to a move.

According to a report from Jovan Buha, Donovan Mitchell has become the Lakers’ primary target over Trae Young. If Mitchell doesn’t extend his contract with the Cavs, a blockbuster trade could be possible.

“I’ve heard in recent weeks that Donovan has become, if the Lakers go down the three-star path, Donovan Mitchell would be the preferred guy. They’re going to look at the possibility and see what the asking price is. There are teams that can outbid them.”

The Lakers have the assets necessary for such a move, including three first-round picks (2024, 2029, and 2031) to offer in a potential deal. This would represent an all-in strategy for the franchise in LeBron’s final years.

However, Adrian Wojnarowski recently reported that Mitchell is leaning toward staying with the Cleveland Cavaliers. “I reached out to Donovan Mitchell and he was emphatic in telling me that he is not disgruntled with anyone or anything in Cleveland. In fact, he said to me, ‘I am happy in Cleveland. I’ve been happy since I arrived in Cleveland’.”

Mitchell is entering the final year of his contract, and the Cavs could offer him a substantial extension. If Mitchell declines, a trade might be necessary to ensure Cleveland gets something in return before he becomes a free agent in 2026.
