‘Law & Order: SVU’ Originally Had a Different Name That Was Nixed For Inclusivity
For over two decades, Law & Order: SVU has captivated audiences with its gripping storylines and complex characters. Interestingly, many fans might not know that this iconic series had a different title in its early stages. Just as Friends was originally Insomnia Cafe, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit began without the familiar Law & Order brand.
The Origins and Premise
Law & Order: SVU is a crime drama set in Manhattan, following the footsteps of the original Law & Order by loosely basing some episodes on real-life crimes. The series delves into the darker aspects of New York City, focusing on a specialized team of detectives tackling cases of child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual assault. Working closely with the District Attorney’s office, the unit strives to bring justice to the victims.
Central to the series is Olivia Benson, portrayed by Mariska Hargitay. Benson, who initially prioritizes her job above all else, evolves significantly, especially after adopting a son and eventually becoming Captain. Over the years, numerous characters have come and gone, with Sergeant Hasim Khaldun being introduced in season 21, hinting at a promising long-term role.
A Record-Breaking Series
Since its premiere in 1999, Law & Order: SVU has consistently delivered new episodes, making it the longest-running series in television history as it airs its 22nd season. The show boasts a stellar cast, including fan favorites like Christopher Meloni as Elliot Stabler and Ice-T, Richard Belzer, and Dann Florek alongside Hargitay.
Behind the scenes, sparks flew between cast members. When Hargitay first met Peter Hermann on set, the connection was so intense that she nearly fainted. The two are now happily married, adding a real-life romance to the show’s legacy.
The Original Name
A fascinating tidbit about Law & Order: SVU is its initial title. According to TV Guide, the working title was Sex Crimes. Creator Dick Wolf explained that while people have an insatiable interest in sex, the network, NBC, had reservations about potential backlash from sensitive viewers and advertisers. Consequently, the title was changed to reflect the official name of the sex crimes unit, the Special Victims Unit, offering a broader and more accurate description of the show’s focus.
By covering a wide range of sexual crimes, domestic violence, and child abuse cases, the name change not only avoided controversy but also contributed to the show’s immense success. The decision to adopt the real-life NYPD department’s name helped ensure that Law & Order: SVU became a beloved and enduring staple in television history.
