‘Law & Order’: New Fan Mickey Rourke Disses Marvel While Praising the Crime Drama
Law & Order: SVU has been a staple on television for so long that it’s constantly attracting new viewers. Among its ever-expanding fan base are both everyday people and celebrities, including none other than Mickey Rourke, who recently declared himself a super fan. In doing so, he took a moment to shower praise on Law & Order while simultaneously throwing a jab at Marvel.
Mickey Rourke’s Marvel Grievances
Mickey Rourke, known for his roles in The Wrestler and Sin City, starred in Iron Man 2 as Ivan Vanko, a vengeful villain. While Rourke praised the film’s writers, director, and cast, he had long harbored grievances against Marvel’s higher-ups. During a 2011 interview with Crave Online (via The Hollywood Reporter), Rourke expressed his frustration over the limited depth given to his character.
Rourke revealed that he had collaborated closely with writer Justin Theroux and director Jon Favreau to enrich Vanko’s backstory, ensuring he wasn’t just a “disposable adversary.” However, his efforts were thwarted by Marvel executives who preferred a one-dimensional villain. “Unfortunately, the [people] at Marvel just wanted a one-dimensional bad guy, so most of the performance ended up on the floor,” Rourke lamented.
Discovering Law & Order: SVU
Like many during the lockdown, Rourke found himself binge-watching television. He stumbled upon Law & Order: SVU and quickly became captivated by the show. Taking to Instagram, Rourke praised the production team and main cast members, including Mariska Hargitay, Ice-T, Christopher Meloni, and BD Wong.
In a lengthy post, Rourke expressed his admiration: “What’s especially enjoying is watching the camaraderie of this exceptional group of actors… I guess if it wasn’t for this lockdown, I’d never have seen this show. But since I do all my lifting training in my living room, my TV has been on the whole lockdown, and I was able to discover this fabulous show. Respect to all of you, the work that you all do is real acting, not like that crap that’s all on Marvel sh*t.”
Rourke’s longtime fans, familiar with his occasional Marvel digs, found his comments amusing. Many even encouraged him to explore other Law & Order series, including the newer additions like Law & Order: Organized Crime and Law & Order: For the Defense.
A Newfound Appreciation
Rourke’s praise for Law & Order: SVU highlights his appreciation for what he considers “real acting.” His critique of Marvel underscores his desire for depth and complexity in storytelling, a sentiment that resonates with many fans of the long-running crime drama. Whether or not he continues his exploration of the Law & Order franchise, Rourke’s candid opinions add an interesting layer to the ongoing conversation about television and film quality.
