The Boston Red Sox were early to the Juan Soto party. They were one of five teams that had already had a meeting with the superstar free agent and had offered him a contract.
Soto is a priority piece for Boston this offseason, and they are taking things seriously. He could be the one player that helps them keep up in the always-competitive American League East.
Outside of their initial meeting, Boston has made a second push. According to MLB insider Mike Rodriguez, Rafael Devers and Soto had an hour-long conversation about the club. He was also offered a 12-year, $50 million per year deal.
Boston is hoping Devers, a fellow Dominican, can sway Soto to signing with the Sox. The two would make for an explosive combination at the top of that lineup. He could help Boston shine after missing the postseason for the last three years.
Rumors swirling about Red Sox offer to Juan Soto
While the Red Sox made their initial offer to Juan Soto, specifics of the deal were not made immediately available. Now, rumors are starting to circulate after reports of Rafael Devers’ phone call.
MLB insider Hector Gomez reports that he has heard the deal is a 13-year, $625 million deal. That would make Soto the second-highest-paid player right behind Shohei Ohtani.
Boston is not the only team making Soto their priority this winter. The Yankees do not want to lose out on their slugger, and they have reportedly upped their initial offer.
This could become a bidding war with the way these teams are acting this early into free agency. Nobody wants to lose out on a player who could instantly make their team a contender right after he signs the contract.
