Jordi Cruyff reveals why Xavi delayed Lamine Yamal's Barcelona debut

Former Barcelona sporting director Jordi Cruyff has revealed that Xavi was forced to delay Lamine Yamal’s senior debut for Barcelona last year.

The Spaniard made his debut in April 2023 (at the age of 16) and Cruyff has opened up on how Xavi saw him, telling X: “I remember when he first started training, after just five minutes, the coach at the time, Xavi, turned to me and said, ‘This boy is special.

“He is exceptional, evident to everyone, but we aim to nurture his talent without placing undue pressure on him. He is 17 years old, so let him enjoy the experience.’ First, we emphasized the importance of securing the player for a long-term commitment before allowing them to participate.”

It looks like Yamal’s debut was delayed because he did not have a valid contract with Barcelona at the time. Irrespective, the youngster has had a sensational rise since his debut and enjoyed an incredible 2024 – helping Spain win the Euro 2024 title.

He’s also had an amazing start to the 2024/25 campaign with four goals and four assists in just six matches so far under Hansi Flick.
