In a candid revelation on social media back in 2020, hip-hop icon 50 Cent shared a disappointing personal experience with NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. During a chance meeting at an airport, the famed rapper said he was excited to have a quick chat with “Cap.” However, to his dismay, Kareem did not properly acknowledge him.
Instead of the warm reception he had hoped for, 50 Cent described the NBA Hall of Famer’s reaction as dismissive and even insulting. This unexpected interaction left Grammy-winning artists feeling disheartened, illustrating that not every encounter with a legendary athlete can be positive.
“I was in the airport one time, I looked [and] I said, oh sh*t, that’s Kareem. I went and said what’s up, he looked at me like I was crazy. I said oh sh*t, well f**k you then, you old a** n***a I don’t give a f**k about a sky hook n***a, n****s been trying to kill me [and] sh*t f**k you,” 50 wrote on X back in 2020.
Unsurprisingly, the rapper detailed the incident in an expletive-laden post. Fortunately, the pair did not get into a physical altercation.

Kareem didn’t like how 50 Cent used his influence
Besides being a basketball legend, Abdul-Jabbar has become a cultural icon, and his identity has transcended sports. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that he is fond of modern-day music, particularly rap.
Despite this, the Los Angeles Lakers icon has taken the time to familiarize himself with some of the most prominent figures in the music industry, recognizing their significant impact on modern culture. A notable instance showcasing his awareness and engagement with music occurred when he publicly addressed 50 Cent along with his fellow rap superstar Snoop Dogg.
This was in response to two hip-hop artists’ unfiltered criticism of Gayle King, a respected female reporter for CBS News, regarding a seemingly insensitive comment she made about the late Kobe Bryant.
At the time, Kareem voiced his disapproval of how two rappers wielded their fame and influence. He emphasized that, as influential celebrities, they are responsible for considering the repercussions of their words and actions on the public.
According to Abdul-Jabbar, their failure to do so reflects a lack of understanding of their power and the potential impact they can have on societal narratives, especially concerning sensitive issues. In his article against 50 Cent and Snoop Dogg, Kareem highlighted the importance of accountability among public figures. He encouraged a more thoughtful use of fame in the entertainment industry.
“Without finding out any facts or contacting King, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Snoop Dogg immediately released vitriolic personal opens in new window attacks on King reminiscent of Trump’s attacks on Megyn Kelly and Rosie O’Donnell. Both men responded to the video by calling King a “bitch,” among other insults. While it’s clear that 50 Cent and Snoop Dogg were reacting from a place of deep grief, their personal emotion doesn’t justify such a public and misguided attack,” Abdul-Jabbar once wrote on his official website.
“Snoop Dogg has 39.1 million followers on Instagram, and 50 Cent has 25.3 million followers on Twitter. When they send out to their followers a threatening and abusive tirade, they are influencing a younger generation of men to continue to refer to women who don’t do what men want as bitches,” he pointed out.
Legends from different worlds
KAJ and 50 Cent have both carved out remarkable careers, establishing themselves as respectable figures in their respective professions through their exceptional talent. While they are legends in their own fields, their contributions to society and their impact on their fans present a fascinating contrast.
Kareem is celebrated for his athletic prowess and unwavering commitment to social justice. He actively advocates for equality, using his influential platform to address pressing social issues. Abdul-Jabbar’s voice resonates deeply with those who seek change, making him a powerful advocate for marginalized communities.
On the other hand, NY born artist became known for his dynamic career as a rapper. He embodies resilience and determination, encouraging individuals to pursue their dreams relentlessly, regardless of the challenges they face.
Through his music, 50 Cent serves as a beacon of hope, especially for African Americans living in tough neighborhoods. He demonstrates that hard work and tenacity can lead to success. Additionally, he has successfully transitioned into the business world, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit and ability to thrive and earn profits beyond rapping.
With that in mind, it is quite intriguing that, despite their significant influence and success in their respective domains, Kareem and 50 Cent do not see eye to eye. Their differing perspectives and approaches to life and societal issues speak volumes about the complexities of being a public figure.
