Jason Mewes is setting the record straight on his comments — or rather, lack thereof — about the state of friend Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s marriage.

Asked by TMZ on May 22 whether he’d heard rumors that the couple’s marriage was “on the rocks,” the actor said, “I don’t know if that’s true. I don’t believe that.”

“Maybe he’s busy working and she’s working and it’s too much with the kids,” added Mewes, 50, at the time. “I’m not saying that’s what it is — I don’t know — but why does it go right to they’re having trouble? Just curious.”

Speaking with PEOPLE on Tuesday, June 25, during the That 90s Show season 2 launch event in Los Angeles, Mewes clarified, “I haven’t spoken to him in a while and I feel like everyone has their opinion, and I don’t know for sure.”

“I feel like even if I did know, I probably wouldn’t want to share that, but I really don’t,” Mewes adds of his longtime friend and frequent costar, 51, and actress-singer Lopez, 54.

The Jay and Silent Bob Reboot actor, who has starred in several Kevin Smith movies with Affleck over the past 30 years, goes on to address Affleck and Lopez’s decision to live separately, with Lopez residing in the couple’s Beverly Hills marital home while Affleck stays in a rental a few miles away.

“If someone decides to rent [a] place [it] doesn’t mean they’re necessarily separating,” he says. “I know from having two kids, it’s like, sometimes you just need a break — especially if you’re like, ‘Hey, I’m going to be writing this script and I need just two weeks to focus.’ ”

“But yeah, no, I haven’t spoke to him,” Mewes adds.

Amid buzz about tension in their marriage, Affleck and Lopez have both seemingly been focused on family and work, celebrating graduation milestones in his kids’ lives and more.

Affleck, who shares three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner, recently wrapped filming The Accountant 2, a sequel to his 2016 action film, in L.A.

The Atlas actress, meanwhile, recently spent time relaxing in Italy with friends and made her way to Paris, where she attended a Christian Dior Haute Couture fashion show. The trip came after she canceled her summer concert tour, which Live Nation said was due to Lopez “taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends.”

A source told PEOPLE this week that Lopez was “grateful” for time to herself on the trip, and that she and Affleck are “doing their own thing so far this summer.”
