American Idol fans were left in tears after Katy Perry rejected a 15 year old singer who was compared to Taylor Swift

American Idol viewers were left heartbroken when Katy Perry decided not to put through a contestant dubbed the ‘next Taylor Swift’.

Payton Riley, just 15 years old, performed an original song for judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan.

Despite her impressive performance, Katy suggested she come back in three years when her voice has matured. Lionel agreed with Katy’s decision.

However, fans disagreed with the judges, taking to social media to express their disappointment.

One fan tweeted: “Payton’s performance was the best original song on American Idol in a while. I cried a little. I’m so tired of the ‘not ready yet’ reason for rejection.”

Another added: “I feel so sad for Payton Riley and her family. Hope she’ll come back next year!”

Many also compared Payton to pop star Taylor, who began her career as a teenage songwriter.

“I believe the labels should be knocking down Payton’s door and develop her talent. Hey, as a matter of fact, Taylor Swift, are you watching American Idol? ” another user added.

This isn’t the first time that Katy has caused controversy on the hit talent competition show, but she’ll be leaving her judging role after this season.

The Firework singer announced her departure last month on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

“I love Idol so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I need to feel that pulse of my own beat,” she said.

“I love the show so much but I wanna go and see the world and maybe bring new music.”

Katy has been a part of the show since 2017.

There’s been no word on her replacement, but there’s been speculation on the possibility of Taylor, Jennifer Lopez, or former American Idol winner Jordin Sparks taking over for Katy.
