Eminem Opens VMAs with Powerful Performance from ‘The Death of Slim Shady’

Think back to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, where Eminem opened the show with a memorable performance of “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie” alongside Rihanna. Fast forward 14 years, and Eminem has once again taken the spotlight—this time with a darker, more reflective tone at the 2024 VMAs.

The Death of Slim Shady is a concept album that explores the rise and symbolic end of Eminem’s infamous alter ego. As expected, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, receiving critical praise for its bold themes and creative direction. The official music video for “Somebody Save Me”, directed by Emil Nava, is already making waves for its striking visuals and emotional weight.

Eminem’s history with the VMAs dates back to his breakout year in 1999, where he performed alongside Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. One of those early tracks, “Guilty Conscience”, now has a sequel featured on the new album—bringing his journey full circle.
