The former Man of Steel is able to look back and laugh at his unfortunate pattern of teasing sequels that never seem to manifest.
It may still be a sore subject for DCEU fans, but Henry Cavill is seemingly able to joke about his run of misfortune with post-credits stingers. The most notorious of these came at the end of Black Adam, which had gone unfulfilled when a planned sequel involving the clash between Black Adam and Superman was scrapped. This decision followed the origin film’s flop and the eventual laying to rest of the DCEU in favor of a universe reboot with James Gunn at the helm. Variety reports that Cavill introduced his new Guy Ritchie film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, at a special screening where he poked fun at his bad luck.
During Cavill’s introduction, he mentioned his previous collaborations with Ritchie. He starred in the 2015 feature adaptation of the TV show The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and had a post-credits teaser in Ritchie’s 2017 movie King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. The teaser was meant to set up a sequel with Cavill in a prominent role, but the film’s failure at the box office led to the sequel being scrapped. Reflecting on this pattern, Cavill joked, “Turns out, I don’t have much luck with post-credit scenes. So, I may give up on those.”
The Black Adam setup particularly stung Cavill and fans alike since Dwayne Johnson had convinced Warner Bros. to bring Cavill back as Superman, even though the studio was seemingly moving away from the character. In 2022, Cavill expressed his gratitude to his fans who rallied for his return by posting a heartfelt message: “I wanted to make it official: I am back as Superman … Thank you for your support and thank you for your patience. I promise it will be rewarded.”
A few days later, Cavill appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to discuss his return as the Kryptonian. “The character means so much to me. It’s been five years now. I never gave up hope. It’s amazing to be here now talking about it again. There is such a bright future ahead for the character. I’m so excited to tell a story with an enormously joyful Superman.”
Despite the disappointments, Cavill’s ability to joke about his experiences reflects his positive outlook and resilience. While the future of his Superman remains uncertain with the DC reboot, fans continue to hope that Cavill’s Superman will soar again in the new era of the DC universe.
