We did find evidence to suggest that Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, were leaving or had already left the U.S. to live in the U.K. Snopes has not independently confirmed those reports.

A rumor that retired talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres and “The View” host Whoopi Goldberg were leaving the U.S. following President-elect Donald Trump’s election victory, saying: “We don’t like this America,” circulated online in late 2024. For example, Facebook account @ThePatriotsNetwork posted the claim in November 2024:

Some readers seemed to interpret the rumor as a factual recounting of real-life events, but there was no evidence of DeGeneres or Goldberg saying: “We don’t like this America” or Goldberg leaving the U.S. for the U.K.

However, we did find evidence in November 2024 to suggest that DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, were leaving or had already left the U.S. to live in the U.K. Citing an anonymous source who is supposedly close to DeGeneres, The Wrap reported the couple told friends the election of Trump was their primary motivation for making the alleged move.

Fox News Digital reported the couple sold their home in California in August. Snopes has yet to uncover firsthand evidence to corroborate those assertions regarding the couple’s home and purported move.

The rumor about the quote in question and Goldberg leaving the U.S. originated with The Patriots Network — a social media account associated with SpaceXMania.com, a website that describes its output as being humorous or satirical in nature. Its disclaimer states:
