Why Chris Meloni Was Willing to Return to ‘Law & Order: Organized Crime’ But Not ‘SVU’
Chris Meloni Returns to Law & Order
Chris Meloni made a highly anticipated return to the Law & Order universe with the new spin-off series, Organized Crime. While Meloni was thrilled to rejoin the franchise, the prospect of returning to SVU on a permanent basis was never on the table.
A Fresh Start with Organized Crime
Meloni was drawn to the opportunity to explore a different facet of the Law & Order world. In Organized Crime, Meloni’s character, Elliott Stabler, tackles crimes with deep mob connections, diverging from the procedural format that Law & Order fans are familiar with.
“It’s not a case of the week because organized crime doesn’t work that way,” producer Ilene Chaiken told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s an episodic show; the episodes will stand on their own, but the stories will also play out over the course of a whole season.”
Dick Wolf, the show’s creator, was eager to bring Meloni back. Meloni was surprised by Wolf’s outreach, considering his abrupt departure from SVU years earlier due to unresolved contract negotiations and his desire to explore new storytelling avenues.
“I wanted to keep moving forward,” Meloni told The New York Post. “I had done the Law & Order way of storytelling, which they do really well, and I was interested in telling stories from a different angle — whether comedic or inhabiting a new world or doing it on different platforms.”
A decade later, Meloni was open to returning to a Law & Order that offered the fresh storytelling he craved. However, he was adamant about not returning to SVU permanently.
“That, I didn’t want to do,” Meloni said. “That felt like going back to what was. That boat had sailed.”
Reuniting with Mariska Hargitay for a Special SVU Episode
While Meloni wasn’t interested in a permanent return to SVU, he was open to guest appearances. It seemed inevitable that Stabler would reunite with his old SVU team, which happened in a special crossover episode between SVU and Organized Crime. Meloni’s Stabler and Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson teamed up once again to solve an overlapping case.
“We’ve reintroduced two characters whose story ended abruptly and unsatisfactorily, and now they are suddenly reunited,” Meloni told People about the episode.
He noted that, given the suddenness of Stabler’s departure, the relationship betweaen Stabler and Benson would need time to adjust.
“They have a lot of understanding and healing to go through before things get back to a state of normalcy or understanding, where they are in their lives and how they truly, deeply fit in with each other,” he said.
However, the actors themselves had no trouble falling back into their old rhythm. Hargitay remarked that their rapport was as strong as ever.
“There was so much shorthand between us, which all goes back to the trust we have,” she said. “He’s always made me feel like I could just jump off the ledge, the cliff, the bridge, and he would catch me, in so many ways, whether it was comedy or acting or friendship.”
Meloni’s return to the Law & Order universe has been met with excitement from fans and has reinvigorated the franchise with new storytelling possibilities.
