The WNBA has issued a statement following allegations stemming from the Indiana Fever’s season-opening showdown vs. the Chicago Sky. Angel Reese and the Sky got off to the worst possible start, getting blown out 93-58 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Saturday after going 2-1 in preseason.
The game produced an ugly incident between Reese and rival Caitlin Clark that resulted in a flagrant foul on Clark, as well as technicals for Reese and Aliyah Boston, following a hard foul by the Fever guard that knocked the former LSU star to the floor and prompted a violent reaction.
The WNBA has since announced that it is carrying out an investigation, though it has nothing to do with the incident.
“The WNBA strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms — they have no place in our league or in society. We are aware of the allegations and are looking into the matter,” the league said in a statement on Sunday afternoon.

While the specifics are unknown, Chloe Peterson of the Indy Star is reporting that there are claims of fans in the arena targeting Reese with racist comments.
“Sources with knowledge of the situation say this is related to allegations of racial comments directed at Sky forward Angel Reese by fan(s) in the crowd,” Peterson shared via X.
The Fever published a statement of their own, claiming they are fully cooperating with the league’s investigation.
“We are aware of the allegations of inappropriate fan conduct during yesterday’s game and we are working closely with the WNBA to complete their investigation,” CEO of Pacers Sports & Entertainment Mel Raines wrote. “We stand firm in our commitment to providing a safe environment for all WNBA players.”
