Canadian pop star Shawn Mendes delivered an emotional tribute to late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota during his recent concert at the MEO Arena in Lisbon.

Mendes, known for global hits like Stitches and Senorita, wore a Portugal national team sweater with “Jota” on the back – a heartfelt gesture following a devastating loss in the footballer’s family.

Diogo and his brother Andre Silva tragically died in a car crash on July 3, just 10 days after marrying his high school sweetheart, Rute. The couple had three young children.

The tragedy moved the global footballing community, with tribute pouring in from every corner due to the shocking turn of events.

Mendes’ choice to honor Jota on stage touched many, especially in Portugal, where Jota is essentially a national hero.

No one expected this sports and music crossover but it is a fitting tribute for the man that was Diogo Jota.
