It almost comes as no surprise that Sabrina Carpenter has won the Video Music Award for Song of the Year for her hit “Espresso.” After sharing a smooch with an alien earlier in the night during her perfomance, Carpenter took the stage to accept her first-ever Moon Person.
“Well, hi,” she said as she posed with her Moon Person. “I’ve literally never won one of these. This is really special. The first people I want to thank are the fans… I just want to say you guys are the reason that I get to do what I love, but also the reason that we get to have so much fun and share music with each other.”
“I just feel so grateful to have the best, truly the best fans of the world. I know that sounds cheesy, but I love you, so thank you,” she added. “Thank you to my managers. Thank you to my family, my cats and dogs that are at home.”
Carpenter also shouted out her “Espresso” co-writers, including Amy Allen, Julian Bunetta, and Steph JonesSteph, Amy Julian. “I just love you guys so much. I love making music with you, and I can’t wait to share more with the world,” Carpenter added. Thank you to that me, Espresso.”
The Short n’ Sweet single “Espresso” dominated the summer and catapulted the singer to a new level of fame. “I figure music is in seasons and the project should dictate a specific time,” the singer told Rolling Stone earlier this year.
The VMA Song of the Year category was filled with a healthy mix of heavy hitters and newcomers and loads of hit songs, including Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em,” Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone, Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” Jack Harlow’s “Lovin’ Me,” and Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control.”
Last year, Taylor Swift won the award for Midnights‘ “Anti-Hero.” Billie Eilish won the year prior for “Happier Than Ever.”
