Rap legend joins prestigious roster alongside pop icons Janet Jackson and Boy George

Eminem, Janet Jackson and Boy George are among the artists nominated for entry into the 2025 Songwriters Hall of Fame. The nomination marks a significant milestone for Eminem, who has sold over 166 million records worldwide and is the best-selling hip-hop artist of all time. His groundbreaking album The Marshall Mathers LP remains one of the fastest-selling studio albums in history.
The annual list includes 26 performing and non-performing songwriters with the rap icon, Jackson and Boy George all vying for entry in the former category. This year’s nominations reflect the diverse evolution of popular music over the past four decades. Janet Jackson‘s influence spans more 40 years with more than 100 million records sold globally.
The performing list also includes Steve Winwood, Beach Boy Mike Love, hip-hop group N.W.A., Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, Bryan Adams, and the Doobie Brothers. Together, these nominees have accumulated more than 200 Grammy nominations and countless platinum records throughout their careers. Sheryl Crow’s debut album “Tuesday Night Music Club” revolutionized the rock scene in the ’90s.
The latter list includes Walter Afanasieff, the producer best known for his work with Mariah Carey, Mike Chapman (Blondie, Suzi Quatro), and Buddy Holly’s collaborator Sonny Curtis. Afanasieff’s work with Carey has resulted in some of the best-selling singles of all time, including “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which continues to break streaming records every holiday season.
Eminem’s induction will happen in June 2025
The induction gala will take place in New York City in June. The ceremony has been held annually since 1969, with the exception of 2020 due to the global pandemic. The venue, typically the Marriott Marquis Hotel, has hosted legendary performances from past inductees.
The artists chosen for induction this year were R.E.M., Timbaland, Steely Dan, Hillary Lindsey and Dean Pitchford. R.E.M.’s career spans over three decades with more than 85 million albums sold worldwide. Timbaland’s innovative production style has influenced modern music production techniques substantially.
Prince and Cindy Walker were posthumously inducted. Prince’s catalog includes over 1,000 songs, with more than 150 reaching the Billboard charts. His Paisley Park studio remains a musical landmark and museum.
SZA was honored with the Hal David Starlight Award and songwriter to the stars Diane Warren was presented with the Johnny Mercer Award. The Hal David Starlight Award has been recognizing young talented songwriters since 2004, with past recipients including Taylor Swift, John Legend, and Alicia Keys.
Only songwriters who released their first commercial hit 20 years ago are eligible for induction. This requirement ensures that inductees have demonstrated longevity and lasting impact in the music industry. The voting body consists of more than 400 established songwriters and music industry professionals.
Too many credits, not enough improvement
“You have 10 writers on a song now,” said Warren, once famously slamming pop stars for using multiple co-writers. “I look at the credits and think: ‘What the f— did you guys all do? Why isn’t this song 10 times better?’”
Her comments reflect a growing debate in the music industry about the nature of modern songwriting and collaboration. Warren’s own catalog includes 32 top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
The lyricist — who has penned hits for the likes of Britney Spears, Toni Braxton, and Lady Gaga, to name a few — can’t believe that the majority of today’s pop songs have so many names on the credits because they don’t sound “any better” for it. Warren herself has written over 1,000 songs for hundreds of artists, earning her 13 Academy Award nominations and working with virtually every major artist of the past four decades.
“Prince, by himself, wrote songs 10 times better than these songs where everyone in the room gets a writer’s credit,” she added, highlighting the changing landscape of music creation. Prince’s legendary vault is estimated to contain over 8,000 unreleased songs, showcasing his prolific songwriting abilities. His innovative approach to songwriting and production has influenced generations of artists and producers, setting a standard for creative independence in the music industry.
