Barcelona reportedly can register Szczesny for Champions League games

Barcelona have taken a careful approach in presenting their squad to UEFA for the 2024-25 Champions League. The club have registered four goalkeepers: Ter Stegen, Inaki Pena, Ander Astralaga and Diego Kochen. However, only Ter Stegen and Pena are included in the A list, while Astralaga and Kochen are on the B list.

This registration setup allows Barcelona to include Szczesny in the Champions League squad if he joins the club. Once the transfer is confirmed, the Polish goalkeeper will be eligible to participate in all competitions.

UEFA regulations state that if a club loses two goalkeepers from List A due to long-term injuries or illnesses, they can register a new goalkeeper at any point during the season. This provision is outlined in Article 31.14 of the regulations.

Although Barcelona have not officially disclosed Ter Stegen’s recovery timeline, it is anticipated that he will be sidelined for around eight months after undergoing surgery for a complete tear of the patellar tendon in his right knee. This absence strengthens the case for registering Szczesny should he arrive at the club.
