Blake Fielder-Civil’s mum says she “wasn’t strong enough” to admit her son and daughter-in-law Amy Winehouse were drug addicts – until it was too late.
Georgette Civil has spoken about how she knocked back Blake’s only cry for help – before singer Winehouse’s death from alcohol poisoning in 2011.
She said she “made excuses” for the pair’s drug use and defended them.
Speaking about the first time she met Back to Black singer Amy, Georgette told The Sun newspaper: “Amy looked glowing. She threw her arms around me and said, ‘Isn’t our boy handsome?’ I adored her. But later, we all sat at dinner and Amy kept ducking under the table.
“Then Blake said, ‘You’d better go to the bathroom’, and she went upstairs. [My second husband Giles] turned to Blake and bluntly asked him, ‘Are you doing drugs?’, but I reacted furiously, saying, ‘Of course he isn’t’.

“From that moment, I became Blake’s enabler – making excuses for him and Amy.”

The pair divorced in 2009 after two years of marriage and the Rehab superstar was dating Reg Traviss when she was found dead in her Camden flat in July 2011. The cause of death was ruled to be alcohol poisoning.
Georgette said she was once called by Amy to a meeting where Blake tried to get his mother to realise the extent of his drug use.
She said: “He sat at the table and said, ‘Mum, I have a dependence and need help. There’s been times I’ve spent £600 a day on heroin.
“I took him in my arms and said, ‘You are talking nonsense’. It was his only cry for help – but I wasn’t strong enough to face the truth … It was only later that I suddenly realised that Blake was a hopeless addict.”
